Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN, funded by the Department of Health) and the Program of Experience in the Palliative Approach (PEPA) are collaborating to provide fully funded education and training placements for palliative care.
Investing in quality end-of-life care is recognised as an important component of patient centred care. This can help ensure the individual’s wishes and values are known and adhered too. Supporting safe, quality palliative care at home as well as being aware of the systems and services available in primary care, can reduce the burden of unnecessary transfers to hospital and support both the patients and their family during end-of-life care.
PEPA and GCPHN are providing the opportunity to develop skills in palliative care by offering funded, supervised observational placement for 2-5 days commencing from May 2022. The placement host site is at specialist palliative care services (Gold Coast or Brisbane sites), and placement days can be spread out or completed consecutively. For successful applicants, your time spent on placement will be reimbursed directly to the employer or self-employed applicants where applicable. The focus of PEPA placements is to assist you to expand your knowledge and skills in the palliative approach to care. This opportunity is not designed to develop you as a specialist palliative care provider, but rather to help you incorporate the principles of palliative care into your day-to-day practice.
The aim of the Palliative Care Placement is:
Improved knowledge, skills, confidence in evidence-based end-of-Life care.
Improve coordination and integration of palliative care to support equitable access to home-based care.
Help improve death literacy of individuals and their families.
Increased awareness and application of palliative care resources.
