ARF can be complex to diagnose, as it may present as a constellation of signs and symptoms and requires years of treatment with long-acting penicillin every 3-4 weeks. There’s a useful app and other clinical support applications available at: https://www.rhdaustralia.org.au/apps
Although most ARF and subsequent RHD cases are diagnosed in Northern Australia in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, there are still cases in South-East Queensland with some on the Gold Coast. Gold Coast cases usually come from more vulnerable populations such as Pasifika peoples and migrants or refugees from low to middle income countries where ARF and RHD remain widespread.
