COVID-19 oral treatment reminder

The Chief Medical Officer, Professor Paul Kelly, has sent correspondence to PHNs reminding all primary care providers to consider oral treatment options, where applicable, for eligible patients ahead of potential surges later in the year.

To ensure patients can access these oral treatments in a timely manner:

stay up to date with the current PBS eligibility criteria
engage with patients to determine eligibility and
discuss treatment options and advanced consent as required, noting a prescription cannot be issued in advance of a positive COVID-19 test
be aware of the new temporary Medicare Benefits Schedule items for medical practitioners to assess eligibility for COVID-19 oral antiviral treatments via a telehealth phone consultation
understand there is no limit to prescribing a second course of oral treatment under the PBS criteria if an eligible patient tests positive for COVID-19 again
