Climate change is the single biggest health issue facing people everywhere. In Australia, we’ve seen this in recent years as catastrophic weather events have become both more frequent and more damaging. Future impacts are likely to also include food and water scarcity, increasing air pollution, and spread of animal-borne diseases. Australia is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, emitting almost four times the worldwide average per person.
The Department of Health and Aged Care has released a consultation document(link is external) for the development of the National Health and Climate Strategy. This document is designed to protect the health and wellbeing of Australians from the impacts of climate change.
But consumers should have their say.
The consultation will consist of a presentation on the Strategy, followed by a Q and A with consumers, and then you will have the opportunity to help guide CHF’s submission by providing us with your thoughts.
Madeleine Skellern is Director of the National Health, Sustainability and Climate Unit within the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. She is leading development of the National Health and Climate Strategy, with the oversight of Stephen Bouwhuis.
Stephen Bouwhuis, the Department’s Assistant Secretary for Environmental Health and Climate Change, oversees the Department’s wider work on environmental health, as well as its work on climate change.
