Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a life-long autoimmune condition that affects over 120, 000 people in Australia. T1D is predominantly diagnosed in childhood and can present at any age from infancy to late adolescence.
Symptoms of T1D may include:
Not all children present with typical symptoms. Some children have a low-threshold for checking blood sugar levels (BSL) with a glucometer particularly in the young child with non-specific and undifferentiated complaints. Prompt diagnosis is paramount children left untreated will develop diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is life-threatening.
With this in mind, waiting for laboratory confirmation of elevated glucose levels is dangerous, given the delays in results and feedback.
Children with suspected or confirmed T1D should be referred to a Paediatric Emergency Department for medical stabilisation and ongoing management.
