Services (individual and group) that assist in supporting a person’s psychosocial needs (navigating supports and services, housing, drug and alcohol etc.)
Non-clinical mental health interventions provided in the community including individual and group based support and peer work, family and carer support, service navigation and drop-in services. Services include specialised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI), culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD), and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and pansexual plus (LGBTIQAP+) providers.
In 2020-2021, the Expanded Horizons program was reviewed, undertaking extensive consultation with service users. During 2022, GCPHN also reviewed the entire Psychological Services Program. This was an extensive process supported by external consultants PWC and included consideration of research, data, service mapping and stakeholder consultation.
A key finding of these reviews was that people with mild to moderate mental health needs who identify as LGBTIQAP+ should be prioritised. The reviews also identified clinical services as an integral component of an improved service model, along with individual and group-based services.
As a result, GCPHN has significantly increased funding to Wesley Mission Queensland, which was determined to be the preferred service provider for this target group. This increase is almost four times the previous funding and will allow Wesley Mission Queensland to deliver a greater variety and depth of evidence-based services for local people who identify as LGBTIQAP+.
Between February and June 2023, Wesley Mission Queensland will implement enhanced services for people with mental health concerns within the LGBTIQAP+ community. Part of this implementation will see Expanded Horizons cease in its current format and transition to a new service offering.
The new service will include the Supporting Minds service, which will deliver individual and group-based clinical services, and a new LGBTIQAP+ Safe Space program which will provide longer-term support services to people within the LGBTIQAP+ community. Peer support groups are within the scope of the new service offering.
