People experience, interpret, and interact with disasters in different ways. There is no one “right” way of thinking and behaving in a crisis or emergency-situation. This event offers insightful strategies for supporting autistic people during emergencies including identifying signs of autism and learning effective strategies for helping autistic people during the different stages of a disaster.
The event is presented by Jennifer Althaus, the founder and CEO of Orange Elephant Creative Minds. Jennifer is a dedicated mother of three, two of whom are autistic, as well as being a leader in the field of autism and mental wellness services. She brings a unique blend of personal wisdom and professional expertise to her work by drawing on her personal experiences, her role at Orange Elephant Creative Minds and her PhD research into autistic youth and criminal justice. Jennifer holds a background in early childhood studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and Criminal Justice.
A delicious afternoon tea will be provided (please bring your own water bottle and let us know if you have any dietary considerations when you RSVP).
This project is jointly funded by the Australian, Queensland and Local Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
