Immunisations are a safe and effective way to protect you, your family and vulnerable people in the community from serious diseases. When you get vaccinated, you contribute to the increase of the overall level of immunity in the population and thus minimising the spread of infection. This concept is known as ‘herd immunity’ and means that enough people have immunity to stop the spread of disease which protects people who can’t be vaccinated.
Immunisation is a way of protecting against serious diseases. Once we’ve been immunised, our bodies are better able to fight these diseases if we come into contact with them.
Thanks to government-funded Australian vaccination programs, diseases like tetanus, diphtheria, and polio are now extremely rare. The Australian Academy of Science provides easy-to-understand information on immunisation, helping you make informed health decisions. Visit the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and Sharing Knowledge About Immunisation for resources and fact sheets on vaccine-preventable diseases.
