RSV is a highly contagious respiratory illness which is linked to the increased risk of ongoing wheezing and asthma, allergies, decreased lung function, and other long-term health issues. It is the number one cause of hospitalisation in Australian children under five years of age (almost 16,000 admissions each year), with one-in-four of these children requiring intensive care. Most hospitalisations for RSV-related bronchiolitis or pneumonia occur in otherwise healthy, full-term newborns.
Immunisation is the best way to protect your newborn baby from RSV.
Paediatric Outpatients at Gold Coast University Hospital are offering eligible babies the free RSV immunisation.
Free RSV immunisation is now available for the following infants and young children:
All infants born on or from 1 February 2024, up until less than 8 months of age.
