Immunisations are a safe and effective way to protect you, your family and your community from harmful diseases. When you get vaccinated, you are participating in community immunity (herd immunity). This helps to protect newborns, and people who can’t get vaccinated, because their immune system is weak. Plus, it helps to reduce the spread of disease in the community.

Immunisation is a way of protecting against serious diseases. Once you have been immunised, your body is able to fight these diseases, helping you stay healthy for longer and out of hospital.
Government-funded vaccination programs have made diseases like tetanus, diphtheria and polio rare in Australia-but when community immunity drops, the chance of these diseases coming back rises.
