Stay protected with a free flu vaccination

Flu Vaccination

The flu is more than just a cold. It can make you seriously unwell.

All Queensland residents aged 6 months and over can access a free flu vaccination, including people without a Medicare card. Getting vaccinated each year is one of the best ways to protect yourself and help reduce the spread of flu in the community.

Talk to your health professional about the flu vaccination and whether FluMist may be suitable for you and your children.

Where can I get vaccinated?

Your GP

Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations

Your pharmacy

Free nasal spray flu vaccine FluMist

Needle-free nasal spray: FluMist

For eligible children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 years, a free needle-free nasal spray flu vaccine is available through the Queensland Government’s FluMist program.

FluMist is given as a simple nasal spray rather than an injection, making it a convenient option for children and young people who are anxious about needles. FluMist has been used safely in other countries for many years and can help make flu vaccination easier for families.

Talk to your GP, pharmacist or healthcare professional about whether FluMist is suitable for you or your child.

Learn more about the free 2026 Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Immunisation (FluMist) Program.

Who should get a flu vaccination?

Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Some people are at higher risk of serious illness from the flu and are eligible for free vaccination under the National Immunisation Program, including:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 6 months and over
  • Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
  • Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy
  • People aged 65 years and over
  • People aged 6 months and over with certain medical conditions

Medical conditions that increase flu risk:

  • Heart disease
  • Chronic respiratory conditions
  • Immunocompromising conditions
  • Blood disorders
  • Chronic metabolic disorders
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic neurological conditions
  • Long-term aspirin therapy in children aged 5 to 10 years
