Disaster Recovery

Disaster recovery is a vital part of emergency management alongside prevention, preparedness and response. It involves restoring and revitalising everything from the environment to economies and social wellbeing. It offers a chance to rebuild communities, strengthen economies and create a future that is even more resilient than before.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred has significantly impacted communities across the Gold Coast. If you have been affected, various support services, grants, and assistance programs are available to help you recover.

Support Services

Mental Health and Wellbeing

The Medicare Mental Health Phone Service offers a free and confidential service for people (not in crisis) seeking support or onward referral to support mental and emotional wellbeing.

  • Anyone can call the Medicare Mental Health phone service on 1800 595 212 for support connecting to local face-to-face and telehealth support. Normal hours of operation are 8:30am-5pm.
  • For people requiring Acute and Crisis Mental Health Support, call 1300 MH CALL (1300 642 255) for mental health advice and assessment. Gold Coast Health provides these public mental health services depending on individual needs. Services range from inpatient treatments, support in the community and specialty services.

After Hours Safe Space:

Adults (18+) who require a brief intervention for mental health concerns (not in crisis), alternative to ED. Open Mon-Fri 6pm-9pm, Sat and Sun 12pm-8pm.  Walk-in, no appointment required.  PH: 07 3186 4000.

Support for young people.

Online chat one on one with trained clinician (with registration).

Alcohol and Other Drugs Support

The Alcohol and Drug Information Service (ADIS) is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to provide confidential counselling, information and referrals for people in Queensland with alcohol and other drug concerns, their loved ones and health professionals.

Seeing a GP or a pharmacist

Medicare Urgent Care Clinics

Open from 8am until 10pm daily for urgent medical care, when it is not an emergency and you can’t access your usual GP.  Bulkbilled.  No appointment required.

Financial Relief & Grants

Personal Hardship Financial Assistance

Residents affected by Tropical Cyclone Alfred may be eligible for financial support.

  • Emergency Hardship Assistance Grants – Immediate relief for essential items.
  • Essential Household Contents Grants – Help replacing uninsured essentials.
  • Structural Assistance Grants – Support for uninsured home damage.
  • Essential Services Safety and Reconnection Grants – Financial aid for restoring essential services like electricity and water.

Check your eligibility and apply for these grants by visiting your nearest Community Recovery Hub or calling the Community Recovery Hotline at 1800 173 349 (available 24/7).

 

Federal Government assistance is available through Centrelink:

  • Disaster Recovery Payment – A one-off lump sum for those significantly affected.
  • Disaster Recovery Allowance – Short-term income support if you’ve lost income due to the disaster.
  • Crisis Payments – Available for those in extreme financial hardship.

Claims can be made online here.

Check eligibility and apply via myGov or by calling Centrelink’s Disaster Assistance Line on 180 22 66.

If you need help with your claim you can call the Emergency information line 180 22 66 .  If you need an interpreter, please advise the team member who will organise one for you.

If you want to speak to someone in your language, call the Multilingual Phone Service 131 202.

If you’re an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian, you can also call and speak to the Indigenous call centre  on 1800 136 380.

You can have someone deal with your claim on your behalf. This is called a correspondence nominee. They can call the Emergency information line to submit a claim for you. They cannot submit an online claim on your behalf.

Local councils, charities, and organisations are also offering recovery aid, including:

  • Gold Coast City Council – Local recovery coordination and clean-up efforts.
  • Red Cross Australia – Emergency shelter and support services.
  • Salvation Army – Financial assistance, food relief, and emotional support.
  • St Vincent de Paul Society – Housing and essential goods assistance.

Training Opportunities: Mental Health First Aid 

If you work in primary care or on the frontline of community disaster support, you may be eligible to receive sponsored Mental Health First Aid qualifications.

Mental Health First Aid equips individuals with the skills to assist people experiencing a mental health problem or crisis until professional help is available or the situation improves. Participants learn to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues in adults, how to respond effectively, and the treatments and supports that are available.
