This course is Advanced Life Support (ALS) Level 2. It covers advanced resuscitation skills for healthcare professionals to develop leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
This course is endorsed by the Australian College of Nursing, Australia (ACN) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM). It is conducted over one day, with a pre-reading component and online video presentations. It reflects the latest Australia and New Zealand Committee of Resuscitation (ANZCOR) guidelines for advanced life support.
Experienced facilitators will support and coach you to achieve advanced skills and knowledge. You must demonstrate advanced knowledge and skill to be awarded accreditation. Otherwise, we can only issue a certificate of attendance (non-accredited).
Attendees will be taught to understand the difference between a collapse and cardiac arrest, recognising the specific signs and conditions that differentiate the two. They will learn to identify various causes of unconsciousness, such as head injuries, epilepsy, or overdose, and understand that loss of consciousness is not necessarily indicative of cardiac arrest. The training will also emphasise the appropriate response to different medical situations, highlighting that cardiac compressions should only be performed if the patient loses cardiac output due to cardiac arrest. This training aims to enhance basic nursing knowledge and improve the accuracy of responses in medical emergencies.
Assessment before action is a must – this means checking for a pulse. Only if pulseless do you perform cardiac compressions. You must understand this basic knowledge before we can award accreditation.
As an attendee of this ALS Level 2 course, you already have access to the theoretical component of Basic Life Support. As an additional benefit, if you undertake a competency assessment during this course, you will be awarded a CPR Basic Life Support certificate.
