COVID-19

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, was first confirmed in Australia on 25 January 2020. This highly contagious disease spreads through respiratory droplets and airborne particles from coughs, sneezes, or talking, especially in close contact. Symptoms range from mild to severe and include:

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath

For access to the COVID-19 symptom checker and updates, please visit healthdirect website.

Some people are asymptomatic but can still transmit the virus. COVID-19 is especially serious for older adults, those with underlying medical conditions, and pregnant individuals. For more details, see Groups at higher risk from COVID-19.

Protecting yourself and others from COVID-19

All people aged six months and over are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine. You can book an appointment to get the COVID-19 vaccine in:

  • Selected General Practices
  • Aboriginal Controlled Community Health Services
  • Selected Community Pharmacies

Get vaccinated

The COVID-19 vaccines will provide you with an increase in protection against severe illness from COVID-19. We follow the advice of the Australian Technical Advisory Group (ATAGI) who make recommendations on who should be vaccinated.

Staying up to date with your vaccinations gives you the best protection.Prevention - Book Now

You should consider wearing a mask:

  • if you’re vulnerable (at higher risk of disease)
  • if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 or have symptoms of an acute respiratory infection
  • if you’re a close contact
  • where requested by someone inside their home.

Mask usage tips:

  • Wash/sanitise hands before/after
  • Cover nose and mouth
  • Avoid touching the front
  • Don’t hang around neck/under nose
  • Use a new mask each time
  • Wash reusable masks after use
Practice Good Hygiene

  • Avoid touching face
  • Ensure good  ventilation
  • Clean/disinfect surfaces and objects often

When should I get tested?
https://gcphn.org.au/community/prevention/covid-19/#when-should-i-get-tested Copied to clipboard

You should get tested for COVID-19 if:

  • You have symptoms of the illness — even if your symptoms are mild; or
  • You have been advised to do so by a health professional

Depending on how long it has been since you recovered from COVID-19, you may need to take another test if you develop new COVID-19 symptoms.

For more information on when to see a doctor and when to get tested, visit healthdirect.
