Disaster Warnings and Notifications

Disasters and emergencies are unpredictable. However, forecasts and warnings often provide valuable early indication of emerging risks. Effective disaster preparedness includes actively monitoring conditions and official warnings, supported by a range of trusted websites that provide real-time updates and situational information.

GCPHN complements these updates by sharing relevant disaster information and resources to support primary care providers to make timely, informed decisions before and during emergency events.

Disaster Emergency Dashboards

  • City of Gold Coast’s Disaster Emergency Dashboard
  • Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Disaster Dashboard

These websites provide real‑time alerts before, during, and after disaster events, including road closures, power outages, and weather warnings.

Emergency and business continuity planning for general practice

Having a current emergency management and business continuity plan helps protect patients, staff and services during disruption. Planning should be proportionate to your practice size and local risks and reviewed regularly.

GCPHN supports practices with practical planning tools, templates and advice to help identify risks, clarify roles and plan how services can continue operating or recover safely after an event.

Tips for general practices (from BSPHN)

  • Consider contacting other primary health care providers in your local area to connect and agree on how to offer mutual support to your community in the event of disaster.
  • Have a patient or client communication plan with key messages and guidance on how you will communicate about service disruptions or changes.
  • Ensure processes are in place to record patient contact details and regularly confirm with patients that their contact details are up to date in your system.
  • Consider how your practice or service will assist at-risk patients during natural disaster or emergency events.

Communications and patient messaging during disruption
https://gcphn.org.au/practice-support/support-for-general-practice/disaster-management/disaster-preparedness/#communications-and-patient-messaging-during-disruption Copied to clipboard

Clear, timely communication reduces confusion and helps patients access care when services are disrupted. Practices should prepare patient messages in advance for common scenarios such as reduced hours, temporary closure or telehealth-only services.

GCPHN provides guidance on patient messaging, communication channels and updating public listings so patients can quickly find accurate information during emergencies.

Protecting vaccines, medications and cold chain
https://gcphn.org.au/practice-support/support-for-general-practice/disaster-management/disaster-preparedness/#protecting-vaccines-medications-and-cold-chain Copied to clipboard

Power outages, heat and flooding can place vaccines and medicines at risk. Practices should plan ahead to protect cold chain integrity and medication storage during disasters.

GCPHN supports practices with guidance on cold chain contingency planning, backup power considerations, temperature monitoring and steps to take if storage conditions are compromised.

For further information regarding Cold Chain Reporting Requirements, please refer to Required Updates and Reportable Notifications.

Workforce safety, rostering and wellbeing
https://gcphn.org.au/practice-support/support-for-general-practice/disaster-management/disaster-preparedness/#workforce-safety-rostering-and-wellbeing Copied to clipboard

Staff safety is the highest priority during disaster events. Practices should plan for workforce availability, safe travel, flexible rostering and clear decision-making about service changes or closures.

GCPHN promotes practical approaches to workforce safety and wellbeing, including planning for fatigue, stress and post-event recovery for staff affected by disasters.

See Wellbeing Resources in Templates and External Resources for more information.
