While state and territory governments lead on-the-ground emergency response and recovery, GCPHN focuses on preparedness, planning and coordination across primary care—before disasters occur.
Maintaining access to primary health care during emergencies is critical. When primary care services are supported to remain operational, pressure on hospitals is reduced and communities experience better health outcomes.
GCPHN is uniquely positioned to coordinate a local, community-based primary care approach that supports continuity of care when it is needed most.
What GCPHN does
GCPHN’s disaster readiness work focuses on three key areas:
Dedicated disaster preparedness support for the Gold Coast
GCPHN has recently appointed Shannon Heathcote as Disaster Preparedness Officer for the Gold Coast PHN region.
Shannon works closely with GCPHN staff, commissioned services, primary care providers and partners to strengthen readiness for local disaster events across the region. The role focuses on:
Emergency preparedness planning
Delivery of targeted disaster readiness and continuity training
Liaison with key external emergency service and emergency management agencies
Shannon brings a strong background in emergency services, complemented by recent experience leading cyber crisis response and organisational crisis planning.
Working with our community
We recognise that every community and provider is different. GCPHN tailors its disaster preparedness approach to the specific needs, risks and capabilities of the Gold Coast region, working closely with health services, community organisations, local government and emergency management partners.
Our approach will continue to evolve in line with national emergency planning arrangements and as the role of Primary Health Networks in disaster preparedness continues to grow.
Prepared communities start with prepared primary care.
