Australia’s National Digital Health Strategy 2023-28, unveiled by the Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA), prioritises system interoperability, health information exchange, and real-time data access for consumers and clinicians.
The Strategy and its supporting Roadmap were developed by the ADHA on behalf of the Australian’s state and territory governments. They were informed by extensive consultation with consumers, carers, healthcare providers, peak bodies, industry representatives, clinical colleges, aged care organisations, researchers, and academics. Together, the documents outline the vision, direction, and key reform initiatives to deliver a more joined-up, consumer-centred, modern health system for all Australians.
The strategy outlines four key change enablers aimed at achieving health system outcomes supported by digital health. It stresses collaboration among jurisdictions, the digital health industry, technology vendors, consumers, healthcare providers, and researchers. The accompanying roadmap identifies 12 priority areas requiring national effort over the next five years.
The four change enablers include:
These enablers are expected to lead to outcomes such as digitally enabled, person-centred, inclusive, and data-driven health services.
The strategy focuses on advancing Real-time Data Exchange, empowering consumers, ensuring equitable access to health services, and facilitating informed decision-making.
The strategy aligns with previous initiatives and collaborative efforts in the digital health domain, emphasising a future-focused, person-centred healthcare system. It aims to support the shift towards personalised and preventative healthcare while ensuring a connected, secure, inclusive, and ethical healthcare system.
The strategy’s collaborative development and its role in advancing precision medicine and innovative healthcare solutions are highlighted.
