Working in disaster management requires you to work in a storm: literally and figuratively. The nature of working in emergency and disaster response and recovery is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. Large workloads and stories of harm can be distressing to workers. Alongside these pressures, the action/reaction/inaction of organisations and their leaders often adds to the pressure.
This session details the overlap between trauma exposure and organisational stressors by exploring the research on ‘moral injury’ and then provide employees with tools to keep working in literal and organisational storms whilst not losing your sense of worth and identity.
Speaker: Mark Layson – Chaplain, NSW Ambulance
Rev Dr Mark Layson CESM MAIES has served as a sworn police officer, full-time firefighter, paramedic chaplain and currently works as the NSW Operations Manager for the Disaster Recovery Chaplaincy Network. Alongside almost 25 years frontline disaster and emergency experience, he has completed doctoral research on moral injury in Australian first responders. He has presented his research across Australian and internationally, and regularly consults with first responder organisations to help them create systemic responses to improve staff wellbeing in ways that align with psychosocial risk regulations.
The session includes a networking lunch (catering provided).
Parking: Car park facilities next door to hospital. There is also paid parking available at Southport Sharks parking.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

CANCELLATIONS: Online registrations will be confirmed immediately in our booking system. This is our preferred method of RSVP. To cancel your RSVP please use the email link or call the GCPHN events team (PH. 07 5635 2455). In recent months a number of registrants to our events have failed to attend and have not provided cancellation advice. This often results in others, often on wait lists, being unable to attend. In addition, GCPHN resources are wasted as costs for catering and support staff are still incurred. Each event therefore incurs a cost per person ranging from $65 – $120. GCPHN wishes to continue to provide training and education at no cost to primary care providers, however for these reasons we may have to consider implementing fees to offset our costs in the future. Please ensure you provide at least 2 days’ notice if you need to cancel your registration
