Gold Coasters are being urged to keep up to date with their COVID-19 boosters and be better protected through the rest of winter by immunising against the flu.
With 2666 cases recorded in Queensland in the last week of June, it’s suggested that everyone makes an influenza immunisation and COVID-19 booster a part of their regular GP visits.
Gold Coast Primary Health Network CEO Matt Carrodus says winter brings more infections from respiratory viruses, like COVID-19 and influenza, so having immunisations when visiting a GP or pharmacy for other health matters makes sense.
“Statistics released just last month by the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance have the Gold Coast under the state and national influenza uptakes by a long way.
“So far in fact that we trail the rest of Queensland and almost the entire country in every age group from 5 years to the over 65s.
“So, it’s important for everyone, young and old, to keep up their defences, and having an immunisation during their next doctor’s visit is a great way for people, particularly those who are time poor, to ensure their immunisations stay up to date,” he said.
“COVID is still very much circulating, and with flu season on the Gold Coast peaking around August and running to October, the time is right for us all to do something about keeping these viruses at bay.
“Just have a word to your GP or pharmacist when you next visit,” he said.
Mr Carrodus said the role of the Primary Health Network is to provide resources and information for the Gold Coast community about how to access local health services.
“For those new to the area or who simply don’t know which way to turn for their health care, we’re here to help make the right connections,” he said.
