In consultation with our council of clinicians, GCPHN has developed helpful posters for general practitioners to empower their patients with the skills and tools needed to improve their health literacy.
In Australia, 60% of people have low health literacy. This contributes to worse health outcomes including a lower engagement with health services, including preventative services, poor understanding of medication instructions, lack of independence to self-manage their care, and higher hospital re-admission rates.
General Practitioners can improve the health literacy of their patients by following a few simple steps. Our Health Literacy Poster can be used as a helpful prompt to encourage general practitioners to:
Know their patients
Consider how you present information
Use plain language and talk about decisions
Ensure understanding, don’t assume
Listen, encourage questions
Invite a patient’s support person into the consultation
