Cristy Welsh is a passionate and experienced facilitator, presenter, and advocate for the transformative power of humour in healthcare.
The Chair of the Gold Coast PHN Community Advisory Council, Cristy has been a member for three years and is a passionate advocate for consumers and improving the patient experience in primary care.
With over 20 years of experience in program development, business development, and stakeholder management, Cristy has dedicated much of her career to improving the well-being of individuals through her work with The Humour Foundation.
She also sees changes in the wind for young women considering a career in healthcare.
As a consumer, I’m aware of a GP shortage in this country – it is discussed regularly in community and during our CAC meetings.
But I believe women in healthcare offer a unique perspective for our medical rooms and patients and that’s something we must encourage at every opportunity (International Women’s Day for example).
Women practitioners offer other women comfort, understanding, compassion and care and wisdom.
They also make it easier for their female patients to discuss what they are going through at any point in time, pregnancy or menopause for example, and that just underlines the importance of women entering and being retained by the healthcare sector.
I believe young women can lead societal change in that respect.
If more female students aspire to and enter the medical profession, it can only help to build the reputation of the medical industry – I know if I were a young girl in 2025, I’d be inspired by seeing women in the medical workspace and that’s what we need a lot more of.
