Dr Michelle Gibb is a nurse practitioner with extensive experience in wound management across the continuum of healthcare and is well known both nationally and internationally for her expertise in the field. With a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Nursing Science (Nurse Practitioner), Masters of Wound Care, Bachelor of Nursing and over 20 years’ career experience in the specialty of wounds, Michelle has a proven ability to inspire, motivate and develop others in the speciality of wounds.

The purpose of the practical workshops is to provide RACH and community nurses with the information, resources and strategies they need to identify, assess, classify, treat and prevent wounds to improve both consumer and health service outcomes. This workshop is specifically for RACH and community aged care nurses working in the Gold Coast region. 

Skin Tears – Topics include:

• Recognise common risk factors for skin tears
• Understand how to classify skin tears using appropriate clinical frameworks
• Select appropriate treatment approaches, including cleansing, re-approximating the wound, and choosing suitable dressings based on assessment
• Identify strategies to prevent skin tears in at-risk patients
• Recognise escalation and referral criteria, such as recurrent infection, full-thickness injury with exposed structures, ischaemic wounds, or significant pain and quality-of-life impact
• Participate in interactive discussion and case-based learning with peers and facilitators

Incontinence Associated Dermatitis – Topics include:

• Risk factors for IAD
• How to recognise and classify IAD using the GLOBIAD
• Treatment options (e.g. skin cleansing, barrier preparations, signs and symptoms of infection and/or fungal infection, role of pharmacologic therapy)
• Prevention strategies (e.g. skin hygiene, emollients, barrier preparations, environmental temperature, clothing choices, continence management)

This is a practical workshop designed to provide RACH and community nurses with the information, resources, and strategies they need to identify, classify, treat, and prevent wounds.
