The demands of leadership, particularly in disaster management, can make leaders feel isolated and conflicted. Many come to the role of leadership with the intent to help staff and society, but the operational and regulatory demands of disaster and emergency response require making real-time decisions that are not always perfect, and that can potentially harm those being helped or helping.
This session details the intersection of ethical leadership, organisational culture, and psychosocial regulations to chart a way forward that will empower senior and middle managers to be the leaders they want to be while improving operational effectiveness, building staff wellbeing, improving staff retention and complying with psychosocial risk regulations.
Speaker: Mark Layson – Chaplain, NSW Ambulance
Rev Dr Mark Layson CESM MAIES has served as a sworn police officer, full-time firefighter, paramedic chaplain and currently works as the NSW Operations Manager for the Disaster Recovery Chaplaincy Network. Alongside almost 25 years frontline disaster and emergency experience, he has completed doctoral research on moral injury in Australian first responders. He has presented his research across Australian and internationally, and regularly consults with first responder organisations to help them create systemic responses to improve staff wellbeing in ways that align with psychosocial risk regulations.
The session includes a networking afternoon tea (catering provided).
Parking: Car park facilities next door to hospital. There is also paid parking available at Southport Sharks parking.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

CANCELLATIONS: Online registrations will be confirmed immediately in our booking system. This is our preferred method of RSVP. To cancel your RSVP please use the email link or call the GCPHN events team (PH. 07 5635 2455). In recent months a number of registrants to our events have failed to attend and have not provided cancellation advice. This often results in others, often on wait lists, being unable to attend. In addition, GCPHN resources are wasted as costs for catering and support staff are still incurred. Each event therefore incurs a cost per person ranging from $65 – $120. GCPHN wishes to continue to provide training and education at no cost to primary care providers, however for these reasons we may have to consider implementing fees to offset our costs in the future. Please ensure you provide at least 2 days’ notice if you need to cancel your registration
