Language matters – guidelines for using language in a person-centred way
Are you working with older Australians in community or home-based aged care? This free, practical full-day workshop will build your confidence and skills to identify and respond to alcohol and other drug (AOD) related harm in older clients.
Alcohol and other drug use among older Australians is a growing but often overlooked concern. Older people face unique risks – including interactions with medications, chronic disease, and falls – that make early identification and supportive conversations particularly important.
This workshop will help you to:
The training is delivered by experienced clinical educators and is designed specifically for workers in community and home-based aged care settings. No prior AOD knowledge is required.

Associate Professor Robert Ali (FAFPHM, FAChAM)
Robert is a Public Health Physician and Addiction Medicine Specialist who led the international research team for the World Health Organisation to develop the Alcohol Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test.

Professor Steve Allsop (PhD)
Steve Allsop has worked in the drug field for over 45 years in prevention, policy, research, treatment and workforce development. He has been Director of two of Australia’s national drug research centres and Executive Director of the WA Govt Drug and Alcohol Office. He is currently, among other roles, Emeritus Professor National Drug Research Institute at Curtin, Chair WA Alcohol and other Drug Advisory Board and Member UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.
