Medicare Urgent Care Clinics can now provide comprehensive BBV and STI testing as part of sexual health screening in the context of CDINS responses. They can initiate first-line management where appropriate and refer for radiology, pathology or specialist care when clinically indicated.
For asymptomatic BBV/STI testing guidance, refer to the Queensland Health STI/BBV Testing Tool. First-line treatment for infectious syphilis remains benzathine benzylpenicillin; management guidance is available in the Australian STI Management Guidelines for Primary Care.
Patients will be referred back to their usual GP for ongoing management, support and follow-up, especially for chronic care needs. For complex cases or serology advice, contact the Queensland Syphilis Surveillance Service:
