Dr Tammra Warby has been a GP on the Gold Coast since 2017. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP), has a Masters in Health and Leadership (UNSW), a PhD in Virology (UQ) and has been on the GCPHN Board since 2023.
As a former participant and mentor on the RACGP Future Leaders Program, she says finding the right people to guide you is key to career success in the sector.
“Aligning yourself with a supportive mentor, someone who has walked where you want to go, is so important,” she said.
“For me it started in high school with one particular encouraging teacher, who got me thinking about which direction to take at university. From there many mentors have inspired and supported me.
“These days there are so many different roles within healthcare – essentially careers within careers – so it’s important that young people don’t pressure themselves to only choose one career for the rest of their life, when their direction may change… and that’s perfectly fine.
“Gone are the days of leaving school with a single career in mind; there’s too much going on in healthcare for people to get fixed into a single job or discipline.
“And I say to a lot of young people, your education is your single greatest investment, none of it will be wasted, and there’s also no single career pathway that will tie you up and define you for the rest of your life.”
