Unfortunately, it is becoming common for children to fall behind the recommended vaccine schedule for various reasons including sickness, cost, parental hesitancy and forgetting or unable to make an appointment. Misguided parental requests for a single injection per visit also lengthens the child’s immunisation schedule. It is important for doctors and nurses to provide education to parents on the importance and benefits of timely vaccination. When vaccination is delayed, children are left without protection from diseases for longer than they need to be.
When a child or adult is on a catch-up schedule, please check the minimum timeframes (intervals) between doses. If a dose is given before the minimum timeframe, the dose will be considered invalid and will need to be repeated (e.g. the minimum timeframe between the 3rd and 4th dose of DTPa is 6 months).

There are times when a child or adult is eligible for multiple vaccine injections in one visit. Do not defer vaccines that are due or overdue. As a general rule, healthy children and adults can receive inactivated vaccines at any time before or after, or at the same time as, all other vaccines. Live vaccines can be given either at the same time or at least 4 weeks apart.
