The Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, the Honourable Emma McBride MP, and the Member for Forde Rowan Holzberger MP, made the announcement at the headspace Upper Coomera/Lives Lived Well offices on Thursday 21 August 2025.
According to the Assistant Minister, the Gold Coast Medicare Mental Health Centre is jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments and is expected to open mid-2026.
“Gold Coasters will soon be able to walk into the Medicare Mental Health Centre and access the mental health support and care they need for free,” she said.
The centre will offer mental health support and care for people in distress, without the need for an appointment, referral or mental health treatment plan.
Staffed by a multidisciplinary care team, including mental health clinicians and peer workers, care is tailored to the needs of each person who visits.
It is being commissioned by the Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) with Open Minds chosen to be the service provider.
Open Minds CEO Karen Hale-Robertson said her team will listen to what the local community wants from the centre.
“We’ll be designing our service with them to meet their needs, and we are very keen to ensure it’s a welcoming space where people can get the support they need right there and then or get a referral into an alternative service,” Ms Hale-Robertson said.
“We’re planning to spend the next year co-designing with the local community and stakeholders to ensure its consumer-centric with a mix of clinicians, carers, lived experience workers and support staff.
“Moreover, by working hand-in-hand with the GCPHN, Gold Coast Health and the local community we’ll make sure the centre complements existing services and strengthens the whole system of care,” she said.
