The inaugural Gold Coast Wellbeing Week will run across the city from 9 to 15 September 2024. Run by the newly formed Gold Coast Suicide Prevention Community Collaborative, with support from Gold Coast Primary Health Network (PHN) and City of Gold Coast, this community-driven initiative is focussed on bringing Gold Coasters together to foster connection and raise awareness around mental health and suicide prevention.
Formed in 2023, the Gold Coast Suicide Prevention Collaborative is made up of a group of local organisations to support the work occurring in suicide prevention on the Gold Coast. Members of the group include representatives from the Black Dog Institute, Gold Coast PHN, Multicultural Communities Council Gold Coast (MCCGC), Multicultural Families Organisation (MFO), Queensland Police, Wesley Mission Queensland, Lifeline, Open Arms, Gold Coast Youth Service, Standby Support After Suicide, headspace and people with lived and living experience of suicide.
Throughout Gold Coast Wellbeing Week, a variety of events will offer opportunities for connection, from a beach walk and lighting of Q1 and interactive art at Swell to skate lessons and a seniors morning tea. By promoting mental wellbeing through collective efforts, the Collaborative aims to create a stronger and more connected Gold Coast community.
Jacqui Greig, the Executive Director of Commissioning from Gold Coast PHN shares, “Gold Coast Wellbeing Week is about connecting with our community and creating safe spaces for conversations around mental health. We hope these events will encourage everyone to check in on each other, promote wellbeing, and support those who may be struggling.”
The week coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September. The day will be acknowledged with a beach walk to remember those lost to suicide. The walk will be followed by the lighting of the Q1, a guest speaker and time to connect with others over refreshments as the sun sets.
“By curating a variety of community events, the Collaborative aims to reach different demographics and areas across the Gold Coast, promoting wellbeing through connection, rather than focusing directly on suicide prevention.” Ms Greig explains. “It’s our hope that we reach as many people as possible and show them that help is there if they need it”.
