Did you know you and your family may be eligible for free essential vaccines that can offer protection across a range of diseases throughout your life? Checking that immunisations are up to date can help prevent serious illness and protect family members and the wider community.
The highest number of whooping cough cases has been recorded since 1991. Immunisation during pregnancy helps protect newborn babies, who are most at risk. Whooping cough is a serious infection that can cause pneumonia, brain damage and death in babies under six months of age. Immunisation during pregnancy offers the best protection. Speak with a doctor about protecting your baby and family.
Shingles occurs when the chickenpox virus becomes active again in the body. It can cause a painful, blistering rash along with itchiness and fatigue. The condition mainly affects people over 50 or those with weakened immune systems. Nearly all adults carry the dormant virus and around one in three people will develop shingles during their lifetime. Immunisation is the best way to reduce the risk and severity of shingles. Talk to a GP about whether immunisation is recommended.
Immunisation rates among Australian teenagers have declined in recent years. If a school immunisation clinic was missed, free catch-up immunisations are available for whooping cough, meningococcal disease and HPV. Check recommended vaccines for adolescents and book a catch-up appointment with a GP.
