There are currently measles alerts for parts of Australia including Victoria, NSW and Queensland. Measles is a highly infectious virus and can spread rapidly in unvaccinated and under vaccinated people.
Measles is a vaccine preventable disease with 2 doses of combination Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine providing 99% protection against disease.
Queensland has recently expanded eligibility of MMR vaccine to include travelling infants from 6 months of age. Due to the natural waning of maternal antibodies in the infant from ~ 6 months of age to measles, this leaves infants vulnerable to infection prior to them being eligible for NIP funded MMR vaccine from 12 months of age.
This is classed as ‘dose 0’ and can provide protection against measles whilst the infant is travelling to measles endemic countries or where outbreaks are occurring, both in Australia and overseas. Infants vaccinated with MMR prior to 11 months of age will need to be vaccinated as scheduled for MMR at 12 and 18 months of age.
