From 1 November 2025, a new legislated supported decision-making approach will take effect under the Aged Care Act, strengthening the rights of older people to make their own choices about care and daily life.
To support this change, the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) has released new resources to help both older people and aged care providers prepare:
Supported Decision-Making Toolkit – Practical information, tips and real-life examples to help older people, families and supporters understand and apply supported decision-making in everyday life.
Supported Decision-Making eLearning – A free online module for aged care providers offering step-by-step guidance on embedding supported decision-making into everyday practice in line with the new Aged Care Act
Supported decision-making is a cornerstone of a rights-based aged care system, recognising older people as the decision-makers in their own lives.
