Protecting older Australians and the people who care for them is a priority. Although all age groups are at risk of contracting COVID-19, older people face significant risk of developing severe illness if they contract the disease.
Oral antiviral treatments and vaccinations remain the best way to continue to protect our older Australians from COVID-19.
Gold Coast PHN continues to work with the aged care sector to ensure residents, care recipients and staff have access to COVID-19 vaccinations.

Older age remains the biggest risk factor for severe COVID-19 and cases continue to occur in residential aged care homes. While immunisation is voluntary, it is strongly encouraged for aged care residents.
Consent to get a COVID-19 vaccination may be written or verbal and must be recorded by the vaccination provider. Sometimes a guardian or substitute decision-maker needs to give consent for an aged care resident to get vaccinated. More information on consent.
Many at-risk individuals, including those in Residential Aged Care Homes, may be homebound or face obstacles and health conditions that prevent them from obtaining COVID-19 vaccinations from general practices or community pharmacies.
Service providers unable to arrange vaccinations for these individuals can request support by completing this form.
Aged care providers must stay alert and ready for potential COVID-19 outbreaks. The Australian Government, in partnership with state and territory governments, will monitor COVID-19 and update the community on public health measures. A National COVID-19 Community Protection Framework outlines scalable response measures and advice for high-risk individuals, including older people. Home and community support providers should review and share this advice with their care recipients.

Aged care service providers should regularly check updates from Commonwealth and Queensland Health.
Providers remain responsible for ensuring they have sufficient PPE stock on hand in preparation for future outbreaks and should continue to source stock through their usual commercial supply chains.
Where a residential aged care facility is experiencing an outbreak and has exhausted all attempts to source PPE from commercial suppliers, requests for PPE can be made via the My Aged Care Provider Portal.
PPE for COVID-19 includes surgical masks, particulate filter respirators (such as P2 or N95), gloves, goggles, glasses, face shields, gowns and aprons. Guidelines on the use of PPE are available on:
