It’s almost back to school time, which means plenty of planning before the school bell rings for the first time in 2025.
Here’s some handy homework prepared by Gold Coast Primary Health Network to help you and your young ones – those starting school for the first time and those returning – get properly prepared for a big year ahead.
Healthy lunchbox ideas
School mornings are hectic, so prep breakfasts like overnight oats or egg muffins ahead of time.
Gold Coast nutritionist, Bond University’s Dr Hayley O’Neill, suggests parents pack lunches with simple staples.
“Homemade is best so plan ahead and buy in bulk to make go-to snacks like protein balls, yoghurt and berries, or veggie sticks with hummus,” Dr O’Neill said.
“This not only saves money, but limits additives often found in pre-packaged foods.
“Plan dinners with quick, healthy recipes – think one-pan meals or slow cooker options and involve the kids in meal prep to save time and teach healthy habits – keep it simple, every small step counts,” she said.
Dr O’Neill says healthy lunchboxes might include:
Mac and Cheese muffins
Pizza pinwheels
Protein balls
Banana bread
Hummus and veggie sticks
Popcorn
Tuna wraps or sushi rolls
Meatballs
Boiled egg and veggies bento box
Banana bread
Tuna and pasta salad
Yoghurt and frozen berries
