Though their paths into aged care nursing weren’t anticipated, Suman Debattista and Rebecca Gibson have discovered deep fulfilment in their roles.
After nearly 15 years as an Enrolled Nurse at Hillview Aged Care, Suman has formed a special bond with her residents, taking great satisfaction in supporting those with complex behaviours and ensuring their comfort and wellbeing each day.
“My goal is to make sure they are okay, that they are doing better, and looking forward to the next day,” she shares.
Her motivation comes not only from her inherent care for the residents but also from the ongoing learning opportunities at Hillview. Continuous training has enriched her knowledge, especially in understanding complex behaviours in aged care.
Prior to becoming an aged care nurse, Suman had an office job.
“My interest in aged care began when a family member was diagnosed with advanced dementia. Caring for them made me realise I could do this professionally – and I haven’t looked back. It’s a memory I’m taking with me throughout my career and something that will always keep me going.”
For Rebecca, as a student nurse, aged care was not initially on her radar.
“I originally wasn’t open to the idea of going into aged care,” she admits.
“I said I never would, but here I am.”
Rebecca spent seven years working in aged care on Bribie Island before stepping away to explore mental health and general practice nursing. Feeling a strong pull back to aged care, she is now a Registered Nurse and Night Duty Supervisor at Hillview Aged Care at Merrimac, wholeheartedly embracing her return to the sector.
“My time in mental health has really helped, especially when caring for residents who have dementia and other mental health diagnoses. I’ve also gained a love for wound care from general practice, which I previously didn’t have.”
Now settled on the Gold Coast, she is thriving in her role, whether leading the team during the day or being the sole nurse on duty overnight.
“At night, I’m responsible for the entire home. It’s about being present, approachable, and involved in the care of all residents.”
Both Suman and Rebecca share an appreciation for their profession, even if it wasn’t what they initially envisioned themselves doing. Their commitment to continuous learning, patient-centred care, and creating a positive impact at Hillview Aged Care embodies the true essence of aged care nursing.
For them, the most rewarding part of the job is simple yet profound: making a difference in the lives of their residents, one compassionate moment at a time.
