MyMedicare enhances continuity of care for patients with their chosen general practice and healthcare providers, allowing for longer MBS-funded telehealth consolations and increased bulk billing incentives for children under 16, pensioners, and concession card holders. Please use the following guide for a step-by-step registration process on how to register your General Practice for MyMedicare.
Starting from 1 September 2024, all general practices in Australia receive a standardised accreditation certificate with a unique number to improve consistency and simplify accreditation verification. This initiative by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care and the Department of Health and Aged Care supports NGPA Scheme accreditation and allows Services Australia to efficiently verify a practice’s accreditation status using the Organisation Register on MyMedicare.
Accreditation exemptions are available until 30 June 2025 for non-accredited practices providing services through mobile or outreach models in rural areas, residential aged care, disability settings, to First Nations Australians, or to people experiencing homelessness.
For more information, visit the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care website.
Healthcare providers eligible for MyMedicare must:
Vocationally registered GPs, non-vocationally registered GPs, and GP registrars can be selected as a patient’s preferred GP. Visit the Services Australia Health Professional Education website to learn more.
Patients can be registered for MyMedicare if they have:
Hardship exemptions apply, including for those experiencing domestic violence or homelessness. Parents/guardians must register children under 14, while young people aged 14 to 17 can register independently.
Important note: A registration in MyMedicare is only successful when both the patient and practice have provided consent to formalise their relationship through one of the processes noted above.
