“My role is both busy and rewarding. My day typically starts with checking emails, reviewing handovers, and assessing residents who are unwell or require extra attention. I then focus on arranging appointments and coordinating with GPs and external providers to ensure that all residents’ needs are met. Throughout the day, I support my nursing staff by addressing any issues they encounter,” Regina said.
“A significant portion of my time is dedicated to preparing and completing paperwork. However, the most critical aspects of my role are crisis management and auditing, which often take up a large part of the day. These responsibilities require quick thinking, organisation and collaboration to ensure the smooth operation of our care facility.”
With five years of aged care experience, Regina’s passion began during her early career as a geriatric nurse.
“I started my career after completing a nursing degree in a regional town. During this time, I gained extensive experience in geriatric nursing, which deepened my knowledge and sparked a strong passion for this field,” she said.
One of her most rewarding moments at work is offering a cup of tea to a resident and sitting down for a heartfelt chat with them.
“With my busy schedule, I don’t always have the opportunity to do this as often as I’d like, but it remains a cherished part of my role whenever I can make the time.”
Regina believes compassion, honesty and accountability are essential qualities for her role. And her dedication extends to her professional growth – recently earning a scholarship from Gold Coast Primary Health Network to pursue a Graduate Certificate in Palliative Nursing.
“This opportunity will enable me to apply for Nurse Practitioner status, a goal I have always aspired to achieve,” she said.
