Changes to Queensland’s legislation relating to Immunisation Medicines have been made effective as of 7 April 2025. Below outlines a summary of these changes.
The amendments include changes to the list of immunisation medicines contained in the following Extended Practice Authorities (EPAs):
All practitioners are reminded that any immunisation medicines administered must be recorded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR). This is mandated under Commonwealth and State legislation.
The terminology used to describe vaccines in the Medicines Poisons (Medicines) Regulation 2021 and Extended Practice Authority (EPA) documents has been updated, with the term ‘vaccine’ being replaced with ‘immunisation medicine’. This also applies to the terms Vaccine Management Protocol and Vaccine Service Provider (now Immunisation Service Provider) and Vaccine Management Protocol (now Immunisation Management Protocol).
The meningococcal antigen has been standardised into a single line across the EPAs and is no longer referred to as specific meningococcal serotype vaccines.
An exemption has been approved to allow Queensland Health Immunisation Program (QHIP) registered Immunisation Service Providers (formerly known as Vaccine Service Providers) to transfer immunisation medicines to another QHIP registered Immunisation Service Provider. Providers are required to notify QHIP of the transfer of any Queensland Health supplied stock using the transfer/discard form available online through QHIP’s order, store and manage immunisations website.
Mpox antigen has been added to several EPAs, see individual EPA sections for specific details relating to authorisations and immunisation training requirements. An Mpox Vaccination Resource Kit for Immunisation Providers been developed for all practitioners to access to support in the delivery of mpox vaccination.
