Catching Mon on a busy day in between patient appointments, we asked her how she’d enjoyed being involved.
“I’ve been loving it,” she said.
“I had great experiences myself when I was a student nurse. I had really good nurses that showed me the way around things and how to do things and that gave me so many opportunities to learn – that was one of the reasons I was motivated to do the same.”
In her role as an RN preceptor, Mon asks students what they’d like to learn and tries to give them opportunities to gain real-world skills, asking her patients if they are comfortable for nursing students to practise their skills.
She gives guidance and direction when it’s needed – as well as constructive feedback.
She’s participating in GCPHN’s Clinical Placements Program as an RN across different general practices on the Gold Coast, including at Broadbeach and in Mermaid Waters.
“I think the more you use practical nursing skills, the better you learn. And I tell my students about tips and tricks with this job as well,” she says.
Bronte Hunter is a nursing student at Griffith University. She was excited to be completing a nursing placement at Broadbeach Family Practice and Skin Cancer Clinic with Mon as part of the program.
“I’ve been able to learn and experience a lot,” she says.
“I’ve seen a lot of procedures being done and have learned about wound care and wound dressings, as well as about care plans and looking after patients.”
So, why nursing? We asked Bronte about what’s inspired her to pursue a career as a nurse.
The theme of giving back shone through, just like it did with why Mon is giving her time to train tomorrow’s nurses through the program.
Bronte’s inspiration
“I’ve always wanted to do something that helps people and makes a difference, and I feel like there’s so much you can do with nursing and it’s just very rewarding.”
