Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) works closely with Bond University and Griffith University in coordinating clinical placements in General Practice for medical students. Dr Haseeb Alam, a GP at Harbour Town Doctors on the northern Gold Coast, shares his experience about supporting medical students with clinical placements.
For Dr Haseeb Alam MBBS AMC FRACGP, helping shape the next generation of doctors has been an integral part of his medical career for decades.
The genial Harbour Town Doctors GP graduated from Ziauddin Medical University in Pakistan before completing a Graduate Diploma at the University of New South Wales in 2005.
He has worked in Australian medicine ever since.
For the past 10 years, Dr Alam has also shared his experience with the next generation, helping around 50 medical students discover what it means to be a GP through the Gold Coast Primary Health Network’s Clinical Placement Program.
He says the benefits of the program are a two-way street.
“I’ve always been into teaching,” Dr Alam said.
“Whatever experiences I’ve learned, negative and positive, many things that took me a while to learn, can be experienced first-hand by the students at a very early stage in their career through this initiative.”
The GCPHN Clinical Placement Program provides medical and nursing students with valuable experience in general practice, supporting students from Griffith University, Bond University, Southern Cross University and the Griffith School of Nursing and Midwifery.
It is also helping address an important challenge for Australian healthcare; building the future general practice workforce.
For students accustomed to hospital placements, stepping into general practice can be an eye-opening experience.
Dr Alam said one of the biggest differences was the opportunity to spend more time with patients and understand their lives and health over time.
“In general practice we tend to give more time to the patient and we have their histories, we tend to spend more time with them and get to know them,” he said.
