Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS)

Medicare provides funds to subsidise access to health and hospital services for all Australian residents and certain visitors to Australia. Each professional service rendered by a health practitioner is claimable by a unique Medicare benefits item number for ‘clinically relevant’ services. Each item number has its own description, schedule fee and Medicare rebate.

The service provided must be:

Within the scope of the provider
Meeting the patients health needs
Deemed clinically appropriate

Annual updates are made to the MBS, generally in November each year. These changes are based on recommendations of the independent MBS Review Taskforce. Please view the the most recent updates here.
